The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the foundation Departments in the School of Pure and Applied Sciences of the Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi, Nigeria. The Department for now, only offers degree in Mathematics and Statistics that equips one with the requisite skills for developing and implementing mathematical methods. The course provides a fascinating combination of deep and mathematically well-grounded method-building and wide-ranging applied work with data. In addition to the degree programme, the Department offers service courses to School of Computing, School of Engineering and Departments in Biological and Physical Sciences. The Pioneer Head of Department is Dr. Julius C. Nwanya.

Brief Profile

Julius Chigozie Nwanya is a Statistician. He hails from Umuokrika Ekwerazu in Ahiazu-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. He had his primary and secondary education at Fisher Primary School Umuahia and Government College Umuahia both in Abia State where he obtained the First School Leaving Certificate and Senior School Certificate between 1989 and 1995 respectively. His university education were at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (2000 -2004), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2006 – 2008) and University of Ilorin (2014 – 2018) where he bagged a B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Statistics respectively. He has over thirteen (13) years of lecturing experience.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department is to train students to acquire academic excellence and competence in Mathematical reasoning and problem–solving through the use of logic and computational skills with main purpose of meeting our national needs in the area of technological advancement which is currently a global trend.

  1. To grow our undergraduate programme and study the landscape of opportunities for our students and make changes to our programs to ensure that our students are well prepared for the opportunities they seek. 
  2. To instil in our students a sense of enthusiasm for courses in our department, an appreciation of its application in different areas and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
